That's right, I said 'teh'. Going into leet speak has to account for something, right? Anyways, I finally saw Cloverfield last weekend by myself. Unfortunately, no one I know had any interest in seeing it, which kind of comes as a shock to me, because from the trailers this movie looked incredible. So I went by myself, which I don't mind, and saw this incredible movie. 5 out of 5.
Note: This review does contain some spoilers. So be cautious.
Looking back now, I'm kind of glad I got to go by myself. I went early in the Sunday afternoon and was greeted by a theater that only had about 10 people in it. This allowed me to pick the perfect spot and feel like I was completely alone. Perfect for a movie like this, right? Right.
I gave this movie a 5 out of 5 because I really don't see any flaws with it. It contained completely believable characters and had a story that was well paced and well put together. If I had to list one bit of criticism, it would be the fact that they showed too much of the monster. While the monster was big, terrifying, and destructive, it obviously couldn't live up to what my imagination could of conjured up (or anyone else's for that matter). I'm mainly talking about the end where you get an up close look at the monster while it rips apart...well, you know who. :-(
The shaky cam had no effect on me. It took maybe 30 seconds to get used to it. But it probably also helps that I play a lot of video games, mainly first person shooters. I believe this film style was perfect for the movie. It made it feel so real, terrifying, and tense that I found myself shaking and breathing heavy throughout most of the movie, and even after the movie. No movie has EVER made me feel like that. The only other thing that makes me feel like that are video games (Call of Duty 4 being the most recent).
I thought the ending was also great. I believe any other ending would of been lame, corny, or something you would of seen coming from a mile away. But I really liked when the film in the camera would jump back to a previous recording from a few weeks ago. Especially at the very end. It kind of makes you feel for the characters that much more. Seeing how happy they were a mere few weeks ago and then seeing them in their current time and wondering what's happened to them.
I definitely want to see this movie again in the theaters before it's gone. It had a lasting affect on me that lasted well into the next day. Maybe this time I can convince Jenny to go with me. While there are some terrifying parts, it's really not so much scary as it is tense or suspensful. Sequel?

I did go to the show this weekend and saw Juno, thought it was really well done, it's not a chick flick either....but had some great preformances in it...
A sequel would worry me, because I'm not sure they could top this. It might feel a bit samey if we were made to follow another 90-minute handycam adventure. If they brought something new to it I could see it working, though. I guess we'll see.
If they did another film that took place during the same time, then we would be watching just more of the same. We already know what the monster looks like, so it's not as terrifying anymore.
I really would hate to see this film become a franchise, but I wouldn't be surprised if Hollywood tried their hardest to come out with another film.
apprently the sequel is the mummy monster comes to get revenge etc etc, let u figure out the rest, aint see nthe original, want to though very good reports, dont think i will buy the game as i am more of a gamer than a film critic
