New LG VX9800 cell phone

LG VX9800

Currenly my cell phone service is through Verizon Wireless. I haven't ever been too happy with them. One of my biggest complaints was the fact that they never had any cool phones to choose from. They had your standard cell phones and then immediately jumped up to PDAs. There was really nothing good in between.

Well finally Verizon is offering a half-decent phone. The LG VX9800. This phone looks great, I would love to get one eventually. Unfortunately this phone comes with a hefty price tag of around $450. Lets check out some of its features:

  • 1.3 Megapixel Camera w/Flash
  • Bluetooth Capable
  • QWERTY Keyboard
  • Email via Wireless Sync
  • Embedded MP3 Player
  • Color Screen
  • Speakerphone
  • Text to Speech
  • MiniSD External Memory Port

First off, a phone with a camera would be nice as my current phone doesn't have one. A QWERTY keyboard would be handy while texting or using mobile web. The mp3 player in the phone would be great where I could keep my favorite songs.

Reviews for this phone have been mixed. The built in speakers sound great, like a mini-boombox. And the keyboard makes for easy IM'ing. Unfortunately, though Verizon charges a big monthly fee for that service. One downside is the weight of the phone (147 g) which is heavier than normal.

My contract with Verizon should be up within the next few months. By then they will sell me the phone for $250 with a 2 year contract - a plan I just might have to take them up on.

The only decent smartphone Verizon offers is the Samsung i600. It would be perfect except it has no camera. I may have to go with a different provider if I want to go with a smartphone. The US seems so far behind when it comes to wireless service.

Can't you just buy one and unlock it? You can pick up a SPV C500 (SMT6600 in the US I think) for about $200 without a contract.

It's the SMT5600 oops! Really does kick butt, the C550 (no idea about US availiblity) is just a little more and that has a 320x240 screen! They're also both smaller then a Gameboy Micro. Oh and you can play DOOM and Quake. ;)

cool, thx man. I've been looking into different providers. One provider does have the SMT5600 phone - $150 w/two year plan. Looks pretty damn good (they even provide you the unlock codes if you want them).
