I don't quite remember, but I think what did the trick was making sure DirectVobSub is enabled, which I think you do during set-up...I'm so sorry, I just don't remember...

How did you get the subtitles working in MPC? I figured out the audio and selected english subs but still can get them to display

But I'm still having a problem getting subtitles. I'll right click on the Haali Media Splitter icon and turn on English subtitles, but they won't show up. I watched an entire episode of CCS in Japanese, and I don't speak it that well! ><
