Suing for emotional distress is bullshit

First off, the world is too overly sensitive.  We're already walking on pins and needles.  We constantly have to be careful with what we say or what jokes we tell.  We constantly have to be politically correct because wishing someone a merry Christmas to someone who doesn't celebrate Christmas may emotionally damage them thus forcing you to pay them later in a lawsuit.  Funny how money can cure emotional distress.  I call bullshit.

I'm sure by now most people have heard about the Michael Richards fiasco.  How the famed Seinfeld star (Kramer) went on a racial rant against several black people in a comedy club calling them the N-word.  They were giving him a hard time and he went berserk.  It happens to the best of us.  I'm not defending what he did nor am I saying that use of that word was appropriate in that or any situation, period.  But that's not what this post is about.

It appears now that the 'victims' of this ordeal have joined up with civil defense attorney, Gloria Aldred.  They haven't stated if they are going to sue or not, but my guess is they are.  Why shouldn't they?  Someone called them a bad name and now they want this person's money.  Makes sense right?  Well, maybe if you're money grubber who can't take it like a man.

I understand that calling someone the N-word is very wrong, and very bad, but does that entitle you to their money?  No.  Unless you sustained some type of physical damage, when someone calls you a name you don't deserve a single penny from them.  Just suck it up.  Is that what this society has come to?  Suing over name calling?  Am I the only one who thinks this is ridiculous?

In the case of Michael Richards, he's already been punished enough for what he's done.  Right now he's been in the publics' eye as a racist.  Currently seen as a skinny, middle-aged, white, bad comedian, racists.  And the whole country knows it.  He's career is shot and he'll probably never be looked at in a positive light again.  Don't you think that's punishment enough?  To be shunned by the very society in which you live.  I think that's some of the worst punishment a person can be dealt.

But now these 'victims' are thinking about taking his money as well.  Why not?  He's probably got lots of money.  He was on one of the most popular shows ever and keeps making more and more money with every re-run of Seinfeld that is shown.  Something tells me that if Michael Richards wasn't on the stage that night and instead some poor, non-famous white guy was up there throwing around racial remarks, that the victims wouldn't be suing for money.  These victims are not under emotional distress.  They know Michael Richards has money and they want it.  Like vultures to a dying carcass.

And where do we draw the line?  What will happen when someone makes fun of a fat person?  Will this 'victim' be entitled to their 'abusers' money?  What about when a little kid calls another kid a fart-eater?  Will parents start suing each other over their child's emotional distress?  Being called a bad name, or getting your feelings hurt is a part of life.  Deal with it.  It's not a part of life that anyone enjoys nor should it be in our society.  But it is.  Suing people and taking their money is not the answer.

Oh I love it when they pull the race card out.  Money wont solve anything thats what makes this 'case' a joke. I like the statement you made aout them being vultures attacking a dying carcass.. exactly what it is! Well put. If it were you or I up there droppin N bombs we prolly would have got our asses kicked and a few midle fingers. But its a shame they have to target his bank as if it will solve anything. I dont get it. Justice right? Or lack-there-of.

Well the N-word is a racist comment a majority of the time.  Like when used in a derogatory statement.  But again, going after their money is dumb.  Everyone knows what you're trying to do.  You don't have emotional distress.  You just want money.  Everyone sees it.

These people just need to admit it.

I meant people shouldn't be taking racism so seriously. Making fun of the color of their skin? Sorry that we couldn't be the color we wanted. Funny thing is, we can't call black people the N-word but they can call use stupid cracker ass white trailor trash.

Racism shouldn't be taken so seriously.

Maybe you should re-title the name of your blog "I love Michael Richard, racist or not, he's the best!". All you did through out this whole tirade, is try to justify Mr. Richards actions by attacking the counter-actions of the people he insulted. Maybe you should try and look at things the other way around. That video clip managed to make its way around the internet in a matter of hours, around TV and major news programs such as CNN within a matter of days, and on the front page of Magazines everywhere in a matter of weeks. Is that fair for Michael Richards? No, but lets all be grown ups here and realize that he brought it upon himself. You mention that if what Michael Richards said would have been said by "some poor, non-famous white guy" he would have just gotten his ass kicked instead. Well again lets remember that Michael Richards is a public figure who has chosen a career in which everything he says or does will most likely be scrutinized by someone somewhere. He is well aware of the fact that he cannot say or do anything that could bring negative press upon himself. That being said, he is an adult and he needs to face the consequences of his actions.

I hardly doubt that the men and women on the receiving end of Mr. Richards racist slant are suing because he "hurt their feelings". Its more of a precedent than anything else. When someone does something wrong, as a society we have to ensue some form of punishment-whether it be monetary or legal-in order to curb any further wrong doing by the same person or anyone else.

And no, I do not think Michael Richards has suffered enough. What he did was wrong and completely immoral. He deserves whatever is coming towards him. He is a coward who could not solve his frustration with witty satire (which REAL comics know how to do), but instead decided to take the low road and insult an entire race! I cant speak for anyone else, but that’s where I draw the line.

I'm not defending Richards.  I'm not saying the fact that he is now everywhere in the news and looked at as a racists is unfair or unjust.  He deserves that.  He did this to himself.  So too bad for him.  He's an idiot for doing that.

You completely missed the point of this post.  This Richards incident was just an example of an ever growing problem with this world. What's next?  Should we cut out his tongue?  Then in your opinion will he have suffered enough?

I know Chapstick, he likes people regardless of what religion or color of their skin, except for Gargamel because he likes to eat his people.
