The fight for net neutrality

Save the Internet

What type of Internet would you rather have?  A free and open Internet that harbors and nourishes technological innovations and communities, or an Internet controlled by cable and phone companies that regulate what you can and cannot see on the Internet?  For those who do not know, this is what we are fighting for right now - Net Neutrality.  In other words, a free and open Internet controlled by the producers and users and not big name, money grubbing companies.

Congress is about to cast a very important vote on net neutrality.  This could decide the future of the Internet.  Since the beginning the Internet was neutral and open.  But last year the FCC eliminated the rules that kept the Internet open to those who use it.  Instead they started to allow cable and phone companies to regulate the Internet and what their customers can and cannot view while using their service.  This is absolute bullshit.  Right away these companies started doing just that.

Without net neutrality the Internet would start to look like cable TV - a few massive companies controlling what you watch on TV, when you can watch it, and how much it will cost.  Do we want the Internet to be like that?  No.  Do these big time cable and phone companies want that?  Of course, it means more control and money for them.  They in turn become the gate keepers of Internet content and determine what you can and cannot see.  That can include eliminating any competition, thus remove free and open media.  Sorry for the language but, fuck that.

Congress now has this decision on their desk.  Do they reinstate net neutrality and keep the Internet open?  Or will they hand it over to cable and phone companies dieing to kill it so they can put more money in their pocket?  Please support net neutrality.  For more info and support you can visit http://www.savetheinternet.com.  Let's keep the Internet open for everyone.  Congress better do the right thing.
