Ahhhh! Why do they keep doing this? Why do they insist on taking perfectly good games and turning them into horrible, horrible movies? You would think after a hoard of horrible outcomes and reviews, people would stop doing this. Yet it continues. Actually, it seems to be getting worse.
I'm talking of course about video games that get made into movies. They suck! Well most of them suck anyways. There are the few that turn out half decent like Resident Evil or Tomb Raider. But dare I mention movies like Mortal Kombat, or Street Fighter, or newer movies like House of the Dead and Alone in the Dark. These were horrible movies that demolished any dignity that the original games still had. Even extreme fans of the game would walk out of the movie theatre with a foul taste in their mouth.
The problem is games cannot be made properly into movies. Games focus mainly on you the player and your character. You have control over the game and determine the outcome. Game aren't known for providing complex characters or stories. It's mostly just about you and your goal. That's it. Movies on the other hand require a little more...fluff. Dialog for instance. Most video games don't have a lot of dialog and watching a movie with little or no dialog would be boring. So movie studios try and turn a video game into a movie with very little foundation to begin with. The end result is, well, bad as we've seen in the past.
Oh and let's not forget about the new game movies in development now - Far Cry, Dungeon Siege, Spinter Cell, and Bloodrayne just to name a few. If history repeats itself then I'm not liking the outcome of these movies. Will I see them? Probably. Any video game fan will have to show their fanboyism by watching a movie of their favorite game that they know will suck.
