The Simpsons take on creationism

Ha!  This is one of the reasons why The Simpsons remains to be one of my favorite shows ever.  In the newest episode aired tonight the Springfield school system was forced to teach an alternative to evolution called creationism or Intelligent Design.  As all us normal people know, creationism is NOT science and has no place in our school system.  Evolution on the other hand has indisputable scientific evidence to back it up and thus is apropriate to teach in a science class.

Spoilers coming up.  It all starts when Flanders takes his kids to a musem about Mankind.  Walking in they come across displays of evolution, cavemen, and the "indisputable fossil record".  Love it!  Anyways Flanders and the church somehow get an alternative to evolution taught in schools.  Of course Lisa fights it and clearly states it's not science (which it's not and hence should not be taught in schools).  She gets in trouble with the law and has to go to court.

The person defending Lisa is a liberal female lawyer from New York (all the witnesses in the courtroom boo) while the procecuter is a down south kernal (think the KFC Kernal) who is clearly from the heartland or bible belt.  Some other random funny stuff happens and Lisa wins thus removing the teaching of creationism from schools.

In the end, Ned Flanders sulks out of the room and Lisa stops him.  What she then said to him was perfect.  Something like this:  I completely respect your beliefs and views but religion has no place in schools.  How would you like it if a scientist came into your church to teach their facts and findings?

And that's the exact way I feel.  Creationism or Intelligent Design or whatever you want to call it has absolutely no place in the school system.  For one, it's not true and for another it has no scientific evidence to back it up.  Evolution on the other hand does.  It's a scientific process that has been proven under the microscope and in our fossil record.  I'm just happy to see big TV shows like The Simpsons taking a bite out of this and siding with normal people of this country (not crazy bible thumpers).

I liked how they portrayed Darwin as a drunk old guy who makes out with Satan. Good shit. :)

Haha. I actually saw this Episode last night. Witty stuff.

Well, if you ask me, evolutionism is the more likely to be right, but I think we can all reconcile on being open-minded... don't you concur?

What I don't get is why they're so afraid of evolution. It's not like it disproves genesis, you could believe in both if you wanted. But I guess crazies work in extremes.

Do as Marge, read the book: http://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/darwin/works/origins/index.htm

But of course don't just read that, the real hardcore evidence came with the discovery of DNA and the study of molecular biology.

The Simpsons are cool! Teaching religion in schools is not. Glad the Simpsons have smart writers behind their back.
