This is Hell

This is Hell - Sundowning CD

No, this is not a post about pain, death, religion, or computers.  Instead this post is dedicated to my new favorite band called This is Hell.

This is Hell is a hardcore punk band from Long Island.  I first heard and saw these guys a month or so ago at a concert where Strike Anywhere headlined.  This is Hell was the opening band.  They kicked ass!  This band has tons of energy.  It's been awhile since I've seen a band with this much energy on stage.

So after the show I got their CD title Sundowning.  With some bands, they'll have great stage presence but their CD will lack.  Not the case the This is Hell.  Their energy and presence that I saw on stage is exactly what I hear in this CD.

Their singer especially.  I love bands where the singer is not afraid to let it all out.  Not afraid to to scream.  Not afraid to to be too loud.  He also has a great grungy, distorted voice.  No shitty melodic harmonies here.  Backup vocals are also powerful and amazing.  Again, very energetic.  Every time I listen to the CD I just want to get up and start rocking out.

Instrument wise I'm glad to see two guitarists who know what they're doing.  Harmonizing, using different octaves, etc, these guys are great.  In a way their guitars remind me of A Wilhelm Scream.  Drums are fast and tight, while bass refuses to be quite in the background.  Awesome.

It's been over a month now since I got this CD and I still listen to it almost everyday.  Check out their site here, or check out their label's site where you can see a music video and listen to one of their songs.  This is one of the main reasons I love going to concerts.  I'll be seeing This is Hell the next time they come through Phoenix, and buying their next CD.  I suggest any punk rocker does the same.

So are you into metalcore at all? Some good bands you should check out are:

In Flames (Swedish melodic metal)
Soilwork (Swedish melodic metal)
Hypocrisy (Swedish melodic metal)
Children of Bodom (Finnish metal)
Arch Enemy (Swedish melodic death metal)
Killswitch Engage (American metalcore)
Chimaira (American metalcore/trash)
Kataklysm (Canadian death metal)
Fear Factory (American industrial metal)

Don't worry, they all speak English :) Anyways, you should check some of them out. You might like them. If you're a fan of drums, listen to Fear Factory, Kataklysm and Chimaira. If you're a fan of speedy guitars, go with Children of Bodom and Arch Enemy. If you just like all around great musicianship with spectacular lyrics, go with In Flames, Hypocrisy and Soilwork.

Cool man, I'll check them out.

I'm not really into metal though.  One of the best things I like about punk is their lyrics.  To me punk definitely has some of the best lyrical artists ever.  But yeah, I'll check out those bands and go from there.

I have a feeling you'd like In Flames. It's impossible not to (unless you're someone on the forum I know) :P

But really, they're lyrical masterminds.
