The best non-main Futurama characters
With 2008 comes the brand new season of one of the best cartoon shows of all time, Futurama. So, to celebrate this new season, I decided to write an article about my favorite non-main Futurama characters. By non-main I mean, characters that have only shown up in a few episodes. Anyways, here are my top 5 favorite characters:
5. Richard Milhous Nixon
Former president, Richard Nixon has made several appearances on Futurama. Voiced by the extremely talented Billy West, the Nixon character is portrayed as an evil and cynical president of Earth. He is constantly attacking other worlds with little or no reason, and is always involved in some type of Watergate-like scandal. Here is my favorite quote from him, right before he becomes president of Earth:
Nixon: “Computers may be twice as fast as they were in 1973 but your average voter is as drunk and stupid as ever. The only one who’s changed is me. I’ve become bitter, and let’s face it, crazy over the years. And once I’m swept into office, I’ll sell our children’s organs to zoos for meat. And I’ll go into people’s houses at night and wreck up the place! Muhuhahahaha!”
5. Morbo
Ah, the news monster. What futuristic society would be complete without a monster for a news anchor. Morbo is actually an under cover alien scout who is sent to Earth to study it and help his race prepare for an invasion. The funny this is, he doesn’t keep a low profile or hide how he feels about Earth and its inhabitants. During most live news cast, Morbo will yell or shout out a threat against Earth and show his true feelings about it, while his human female co-anchor just laughs. But it’s how he delivers these threats that make him so hilarious. It’s like someone with tourettes. Here’s a great quote from Morbo while hosting an Iron Chef type show:
Morbo: “Welcome back. Our next guest has been teaching the world to cook for over twenty years. But apparently my wife hasn’t been listening. [studio laughter] I WILL DESTROY HER!! And now, extend a formulaic greeting to Master Chef Elzar. So, Elzar, what will you be cooking for Morbo to devour with his mighty jaws?”
Elzar: “Morbo, I’m gonna whip you up a nice, unnameable horror from beyond… with mango chutney.”
Morbo: “Pathetic humans, PREPARE TO WRITE DOWN THE RECIPE!!”
3. Lrrr
Ruler of a militaristic alien world, Lrrr has attacked Earth on several different occasions. He’s extremely short tempered and has an on again off again relationship with his wife. With his home of the planet of Omicron Persei 8, Lrrr likes to watch Earth TV shows on a 1000 year delay. His favorite being Single Female Lawyer, Lrrr once attacked Earth for not showing the final episode. He’s also tried human horn as an alien aphrodisiac to help with him and his wife’s relationship. He also got high from eating a hippie. My favorite quote:
Lrrr: “People of Earth, I am Lrrr of the planet Omicron Persei 8. Is this thing on? Now then: We want the one you call “McNeal”. Give us McNeal or we will lay waste to your cities with our anti-monument laser. We demand McNeal! […] We will raise your planet’s temperature by one million degrees a day, for five days, unless we see McNeal at 9pm tomorrow – 8 central!”
2. Robot Santa
Only Futurama can take such a lovable and well-known character like Santa Claus and turn him into a psychotic, blood thirsty robot. Robot Santa was created to determine who was naughty and who was nice, but due to a programming error, his standards were set too high. And now anyone who is considered naughty, is punished with death. I can’t help but laugh as I write this. So every Xmas, Santa comes to town and pretty much goes on a rampage while shouting, “HO HO HO!!”. Here is my favorite quote:
Robot Santa: “Your mistletoe is no match for my TOW missile!”
1. That 80’s guy
My favorite non-main character. Though only appearing in one episode with no name other than That Guy, he is one of the greatest non-main characters the show ever produced. 80’s guy is in the same boat as Fry – he’s from the 1980’s and was frozen until the year 3000. He’s also a Wall Street shark who makes lots and lots of references to the 80’s like they’re still current in the future. To truly appreciate this character, just watch this short video of him below.
Anyways, those are my favorite non-main characters from Futurama. Sure, there are lots and lots of other great characters, but these ones just make me laugh more than the others. I can’t wait for the new season of Futurama in 2008 and hope they continue to feature some of these characters.
